Fashion in Meteor Garden

•    Colours in the character’s clothing. 

Shancai is eighteen years old. She lives with her parents in a house in Shanghai. Her mom also has her own takeaway, which Shancai helps with. Shancai first meets the group F4 on her first day of university. A member of the group called Si, breaks her phone by stepping on it while walking in a crowd. Si is shown as an aggressive and opinionated person in this series. The clothing he wears are dark colours such as black and navy. As well as popular brands to show his superiority. The colours of his clothing can perceive him as a scary person and not very welcoming. When Shancai tries to talk to him, he blames the problem on her. But when she talks to another member of F4 called Lei. He is kind and understanding this is also shown in the clothes that he wears. As the colours are brighter and more neutral tones this can imply, he is soft and not as threatening as Si.  

 

• Different outfits and hierarchy. 

The days for Shancai in university and at home are quite simple. Except for some of the incidents she has in the cafeteria, where she has slipped or been pushed, and food has been spilled on her. Shancai’s daily outfits for university are comfortable and simple such as a jumper and jeans. This is the same as any other person would wear. So, when these incidents happen it is unfortunate for Shancai as that is the outfit she has for the day, unlike the members of F4. As shown in the series they change their outfits a few times during the day for meals, and evening events. This shows the superiority of F4 to Shancai and her friends in university. As wells as the brands and pricing of the clothes F4 wears compared to Shancai. During one of the scenes Si waits for Shancai and when she arrives, she is wearing an expensive jacket her mom bought her, but to Si it is ‘cheap’. This also shows the hierarchy and where Shancai stands in comparison to Si in life.

• Jing’s Birthday Party 

One of the statement scenes from this series would be episode 5 which is Jing’s birthday party. In this episode, the power of
money and love are the main themes. As Lei’s love interest or crush, Jing is having a birthday party. The significance of money is shown as Jing wears an elegant, black, sparkly dress that is partially see through. This dress is the statement of the party as worn by Jing who is a model, and she is high up in the hierarchy. In comparison to Shancai’s outfit which is a heavier blue fabric which shows Shancai as young and colourful. The main event of Shancai’s birthday party is her speech. During the speech Jing talk about how her being away showed her a different view of the world and how she wants to help, and by doing this she is giving up her inheritance and money. Knowing her parents would not approve of this to show her determination

 Jing cuts her hair off. This is a hug statement as hair is a sign of wealth and power and by Jing cutting it, she is proving her independence from her family and how she does not want the money from her parents to affect her lie and how she is treated by everyone.
