The Parent-Child
Relationships in ‘Meteor Garden’
Shancai’s Parents
In Meteor Garden, Shancai’s relationship with her parents is very different to the relationship people would have with their parents in Ireland.
Her mum
really wants her to marry someone rich because she hopes that she will have a
better life than what she was able to give her. She used her connections to get
Shancai into Mingde University. She was very excited when Dào Míng Sì came over
to their house because she knew his family had lots of money. Even though
Shancai kept saying she wanted Sí to leave her mum ignored her and let him stay
for dinner because she wanted him to feel welcomed in their home. Shancai’s
parents really like Sí after he came over to visit and apologise to Shancai. He
was really polite to them and even though Shancai told them that she hated him,
they didn’t care. They wanted Shancai to start going out with him and
eventually marry him so that she could have a better life because they knew his
family had a lot of money.
Her dad is
very protective over her and wants to make sure she is ok at all times. He
always tries to get her to eat more food so that she never goes hungry.
Just before
Shancai’s date with Sí she was out shopping with her mum and she found a coat
that she loved. She knew it was too expensive for her family, but her mum
wanted to buy it for her anyway. This showed us that her mum wanted her to
always be able to have nice things and that she loved and cared about her more
than she would ever know.
When Sí
returns from London and shows up to Shancai’s house her parents have no problem
inviting him in and letting the two of them sleep in the same room. All they
want is for Shancai to have a good and happy life and they will do whatever
they can to get that for her.
Sí’s Parents
It seems like Dao Ming Sí’s parents don’t really care about him and they leave him with the butler. To Shancai’s parents it seems like they have a perfect life, but they really don’t. They mention Sí’s mum living in London, but his dad is never mentioned. His parents always seem to be too busy for him and their butler has kind of taken the place of a father figure in his life.
